Your last will and testament is only valid if it meets the requirements of Michigan law. It is a document that provides how your property is to be distributed after your death, and it is your last chance to provide for, and protect, your loved ones.
If your will does not meet state law requirements, then state laws will control how your property is distributed and your stated wishes will not be honored. The importance of having a properly executed will cannot be underestimated.
Wills should be individual documents, each as unique as the individual who signs them. Careful thought needs to be given to the consequences of bequests. As circumstances change, wills need to be changed. A will that reflected your wishes five years ago may not do so today.
Obtaining legal advice is also important in drafting your last will and testament. First, your will must meet the legal requirements of the State of Michigan. Second, your will needs to do what you wish it to do. Without legal counsel, your intent may not be reflected properly in the document under the law. Not taking advantage of an attorney's guidance can be very detrimental to you and your loved ones.
