In Michigan "parenting time" refers to child visitation: it's the same thing. It is the time the
parent who does not live with the child gets to see and spend time with his/her child.
This parent, called the "non-custodial parent," is provided specific time periods to be with his child/children. Usually, the schedule involves alternate weekends, alternate national holidays, half of the children's school vacations, and one evening during the week. Parents are always free to negotiate outside this standard schedule, and oftentimes, do.
What is the prevailing consideration in scheduling parenting time? The best interests of the child. Courts will decide what amount of parenting time is best for the child, and expect the parents to respect that determination if they cannot reach an agreement between themselves.
Having legal counsel can be very helpful in negotiating parenting time during the divorce process. Additionally, if you want more parenting time with your child; if you are concerned with the circumstances surrounding your child during the parenting time he is away from you; or your ex- spouse is considering a move, then you may find a lawyer's help invaluable.
